Fifteen things feel urgent. None of them are moving. The problem is not effort. The problem is processing.

Every founder knows the feeling. The list is long. Every item on it matters. Each one pulls attention from the others. The harder you work, the more scattered the results. You finish the week exhausted and nothing has fundamentally changed.

The issue is rarely a lack of action. It is a lack of processing between seeing the gap and taking the action. When the step between "something is wrong" and "here is what I do about it" is a straight line, the action is almost always reactive. It addresses the symptom. The underlying gap stays open and generates the next symptom tomorrow.

Five stages

  1. Gap. What do we know about what is missing? Not the solution. Not the fix. Just the gap. Name the distance between where you are and where you should be. Be specific. "Our pipeline is thin" is not a gap. "We have zero enquiries from outside our existing network" is a gap.

  2. Problem. What specific problems are creating that gap? The gap might reveal three problems or five. Name each one. Do not solve yet. The goal is a clear list of what is blocking progress, not a plan for fixing it.

  3. Question. What questions need answering before a solution makes sense? This is where most people jump to ideas. Do not jump. Ask questions first. "What would need to be true for this to work?" "Who has solved this before?" "What data would change my mind?" Better questions produce better ideas.

  4. Idea. What ideas could address the problems? Now you generate. But you are generating from a named gap, a list of the problems that produce it, and a set of questions that frame what to try. You have named the gap, identified the problems, and asked the right questions. The ideas that emerge are targeted, not scattered.

  5. Action. What is the specific, immediate next move? One action. Not a plan. Not a roadmap. One clear step that moves the most important thing forward. If the processing was done well, one action often resolves problems across multiple areas.

Why it works across everything

Gap to Action applies to any situation where you see a problem but cannot find traction.

  • A firm struggling with pricing: the gap is not "our prices are too low."

  • The gap is "clients do not perceive the value before the proposal arrives."

  • The problem is that the firm describes activities instead of outcomes.

  • The question is "what outcome can we name and prove?"

  • The idea is to restructure the offer around measurable results.

  • The action is to rewrite one service description as a provable promise and test it on the next prospect.

The framework prevents reactive execution. It creates a pause between seeing the problem and acting on it. That pause is where the named gap, the list of problems, and the right questions actually meet.

Gap to Action™ is a processing framework in the People & Pillar™ system. It works alongside Learn Think Execute™ (the operating cycle) and the Bridge Principle™ (which improves the quality of questions in Stage 3).
