The Intelligence Gap That AI Was Supposed to Close

Most firms adopted AI and few can say what it did for the business. The gap is not the tool. It is the intelligence behind it. Here is what is missing.

A 2026 Goldman Sachs survey of small businesses found 76% now use AI in some form, and only 14% have integrated it into how the business actually operates. Thomson Reuters found the same pattern inside professional services this year: adoption at critical mass, impact unclear.

The gap is not the technology. The gap is what the technology was asked to do.

The gap is not the technology. It is what the technology was asked to do.

Most firms approached AI the way they approach any new tool: buy it, deploy it, hope it works. The AI generated content, summarised research and drafted proposals. It did what it was told.

But it was told the wrong things because the firm did not have a read of the questions that matter: who are we trying to reach? What do those people actually search for? What language do they use? Where do they spend time? What makes them choose one firm over another?

Without those answers, AI produces output that is fast, fluent and generic. The tool worked. The intelligence behind the tool was missing.

The difference between activity and results is the intelligence going in

Activity looks like productivity. Content is being published. Research is being generated. Drafts are being produced.

Results look different. The content answers the specific question a buyer typed at two in the morning. The research reveals something about the market the firm did not know. The proposal uses the buyer's language, not the firm's language.

The difference is better intelligence going into the AI. When a firm knows who chooses, what they search for, where they look and what drives their trust, every AI tool can produce more specific and useful output.

The AI Market Research Analyst™ was built for this exact gap

It is one guided analyst that uses AI to investigate five layers and gather market understanding specific to the practice, its buyers and its decision.

The Industry Analysis™ maps the forces shaping the market. The Demand Analysis™ traces how clients find and choose. The Buyer Analysis™ shows who is deciding and what drives them. The Client Analysis™ surfaces what buyers say and search for. The Platform Analysis™ identifies where they spend time and where the firm should be visible.

The analyst produces five connected research analyses plus a Market Decision Brief: the intelligence layer between the AI tools a business already has and the results it expected.

The AI Market Research Analyst™ is a free market-research product from People & Pillar™.
